Joshua Pierce Affiliate Concert Artist, The Dorothy Taubman Seminar Official Pianist of American Festival of Microtonal Music
The New York Times calls Joshua Pierce “eloquent,” Classical Net calls him “spectacular,” and Billboard credits his classical work with “moments that could excite even the most staunch traditional jazzman.” That sort of praise is remarkable for an artist with decades of innovative work under his belt. But Pierce, world-renowned as one of the most dynamic and versitile piano talents of his generation, approaches his art with an energy that seems constantly renewed. He is at once a key interpreter of contemporary music; a master of classics like Brahms, Liszt, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff; and a pioneer in some of the 20th century’s most iconoclastic sounds, most notably the late composer John Cage, with whom he worked closely for many years. Pierce’s discography includes the complete piano concertos of Beethoven, Brahms, andLiszt as well as other 19th and 20th century war-horses. He has recently completed a new album of small works for piano and orchestra that is due out this year on Kleos Classics Records. Featuring the music of composers like Carl Reinecke, Felix Mendelssohn, Carl Czerny, and Johann Hummel, the yet untitled volume is a follow-up to For the Fun of it All, the acclaimed disk released early in 2003. Last year, he drew powerful reviews for his world premiere performances in New York of Michael Harrison’s Revelation: Music for the Harmonically Tuned Piano. This spring, he will join Dorothy Jonas in a two-piano concert at the Music Conservatory of Westchester, then join Jonas and Richard Kapp and the Philharmonia Virtuosi in a performance of Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. Mr. Pierce is a student of Dorothy Taubman. |
